Breeders of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels should be knowledgeable enough to produce sound litters. Much work has to be done, exploring the breed standard and visiting many shows and other events. Attendance of shows broadens one's experience and gives a clear-cut idea of what a balanced dog should look like and what features it should display. Watching judges at work will help you to better understand requirements and set a goal in a breeding program.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels - Dogs - Appearance
According to the standard, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should reach the height of about 12-13 inches at the shoulder. The weight ranges between 13 and 18 pounds. The tail is set well on. The standard allows undocked tails. When docked, it should retain two thirds.
The head should come in balance with the rest of the body. Breeders should strive to produce dogs with slightly tapered muzzles. Yet, a pointed muzzle is considered a fault in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Dark eyes are of almond shape giving a gentle expression. They are large, yet should not be too prominent.
As for the coat, it can be of four color patterns. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in Blenheim color have rich chestnut markings on pearly white ground. A peculiar feature of Blenheim Cavaliers is a spot on the head. However, not all dogs of this color pattern have the spot. Tri-colored Cavaliers come in black and white with tan points. Ruby dogs are of rich red color. Black and tan is the forth color pattern.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels - Dogs - Health Issues
Breeders should take particular effort to breed from health proved dogs. The breed is known to suffer from such disorders as heart problems, cataracts, and subluxating patellas. Experienced breeders who have been dealing with the breed for quite a long time are aware of the dangers these conditions may lead to and always test their breeding stock prior to producing a litter.
It is not yet determined how cataracts are inherited in the breed. Yet, whatever the way, the disease may lead to blindness. This condition can be revealed at an early age and is not necessarily inherited. Breeding affected dogs is not allowed. To determine if the parent dogs are potentially dangerous or not, breeders should contact the CERF (Canine Eye Registration Foundation) and learn more about the procedure.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are the breed that suffers a lot from Mitral Valve Disease. This condition has a number of other names, including endocardiosis, chronic degeneration valvular disease, chronic valvular fibrosis, and others. It is estimated that MVD (Mitral Valve Disease) makes up about 75% of all the heath conditions of canines. It can appear in virtually any breed, yet smaller dogs such as Dachshunds, Miniature Poodles and Schnauzers, and Chihuahuas seems to suffer most.
The reason why MVD arouses so much concern among breed fanciers is the fact that it occurs in the breed at a very early age. About 10% of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels under the age of one are reported to be affected. By the age of 5 years old, about a half of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's population experience this heart condition.
Sadly enough, there is little known about the causes of MVD. Research shows that males suffer more from the condition than females. It is practically impossible to reveal MVD at an early age unless the dog shows characteristic symptoms. Thus, the main thing responsible breeders are supposed to do is to keep track of the puppies they produce. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that produce affected litters are not recommended for breeding.
