Others insisted that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should do away with being a Miscellaneous breed and enter the Toy Group of AKC recognized breeds.

Thus, the CKCSC-USA lost some of its members who preferred to establish a separate breed club under the patronage of the AKC. Along with the AKC breed full recognition in 1996, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel acquired a new club named the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club. The both clubs operate on an independent basis, yet have improvement of the breed as the main objective.

To become a member of the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the AKC Parent Club, one should choose one of two types of membership. The regular membership is for those breeders, owners, and handlers who have been dealing with the breed for quite a long period of time and have proved themselves to be the true fanciers of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Others, who do not have much experience with the breed or are going to purchase a dog, can acquire associate membership and improve their skills of breeding and owning Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
